A major goal of group therapy is the development of coping skills specific to sexual abuse. These are in the general areas of increased self-esteem, enhanced social support, clearer understanding/knowledge of the abuse, modulation of anxiety through the development of relaxation and imagery skills, enhanced empathy, and improved awareness of one's relationship with others. In the treatment format described in this article, the group is used to assess the child's ability to form peer relationships and to discuss topics related to sexual abuse and victimization. Specific treatment goals are to facilitate the development of relationships with the group members and leaders. Generally, a male and female therapist are co-leaders. Each session lasts 1 to 1 1/2 hours. Boys admitted to the group have acknowledged their abuse, have adequate social skills and verbal abilities, and have normal impulse control. The group size ranges from three to six boys. This article profiles the boys in a specific series of four sessions and describes the dynamics and effects of the sessions. Themes that emerge are vulnerability, personal neediness, sexualized aggressiveness, and denial. 17 references.
