Of the 273 persons convicted and sentenced for serious felony offenses, 267 received PSI reports. Of the 177 selected felony offenders, 170 received PSI reports. The average offender imprisoned for a serious felony was 29.4 years old, of Hawaiian or part-Hawaiian race, in pretrial custody, drug dependent, arrested as a juvenile, and arrested numerous times as an adult. The average felon sentenced to probation for a serious felony was 28.1 years old, white, alcohol dependent, and released from pretrial custody. Characteristics common to offenders sentenced to either prison or felony probation for serious offenses were male, single, high school graduates, and unemployed; usual occupations of general labor; poor social support systems; good physical and mental health; injurious to victims; and crimes for which restitution was appropriate. Similar profile data are provided for offenders given prison and probation for selected felony offenses. Tracking data are presented for 88 serious-felony offenders and 129 selected-felony offenders sentenced to probation. Parole data are supplied for 179 cooffenders with serious felonies and 36 selected-felony offenders who served prison sentences. 58 tables, 5-item bibliography.
