Abstract
Data and information were obtained from a review of classification documents and supporting information, questionnaires distributed to a sample of key staff, workshops with classification staff at correctional institutes, and visits to institutions to interview classification staff and observe classification activities. Based on study information and the classification objectives identified, a series of recommendations cover general classification, initial classification, institutional classification, and classification system information needs. General classification recommendations pertain to classification decisionmaking, inmate needs assessment, programming, classification information, staffing/staff development, and planning. Fourteen steps are outlined for implementing an enhanced classification system. 14 tables. (Author summary modified)
