These 52 papers were presented at an international conference that focused on the problems posed by HIV and AIDS in both industrialized and developing countries.
Abstract
The conference aimed to provide a forum for discussion of the nature and extent of these issues and to encourage the identification and development of priorities and polices for the future. Discussions reflected biomedical, epidemiological, clinical, social, behavioral, economic, demographic, political, and legal perspectives. Participants included experts representing both governmental and nongovernmental organizations. Papers on epidemiology focus on both worldwide epidemiology and specific aspects of the epidemic in developing nations, Africa, the Caribbean, the United States, Ghana, Italy, and Norway. The effects of the AIDS epidemic on the tuberculosis problem and issues related to international travel are also discussed. Discussions of the impacts of AIDS focus on effects on social organization in general, population growth, age structure, family planning programs, economic resources, health care delivery, food production, mining, families with children, and grandmothers. Papers focusing on prevention and control examine global strategies, evaluations of prevention campaigns, the role of non-governmental organizations, the role of the mass media, legislation and regulation, school-based educational programming, public attitudes, a needle/syringe exchange program, and vaccines. A summary emphasizes the need for international cooperation and actions based on efficiency and equity. Tables, chapter reference lists, index, and appended recommendations from the Council of Europe Committee of Ministers.
