Components of a thorough medical evaluation consist of an examination of presenting problems, assessment of evidence of other maltreatment, evaluation of the child's past medical history, and an analysis of the child's family dynamics and environment. The protocol lists factors which indicate that abuse or neglect is probable. Factors which increase the probability that child abuse or neglect has occurred are substantial family social disorganization, a rejecting parental attitude toward the child, signs of parental incompetence, and a fearful child. The protocol lists the responsibilities of the investigator from the Illinois Department of children and Family Services in compiling the medical evaluation in cases of suspected child abuse or neglect. Appendixes provide supplementary guidelines and information pertinent to medical evaluations for child abuse and neglect.
