This report provides statistics and information on criminal justice activities in the District of Columbia in 1984 and 1985.
Abstract
Data presented in the report come from the Metropolitan Police Department, Pretrial Services Agency, Office of Criminal Justice Plans and Analysis, U.S. Attorney's Office, D.C. Office of the Corporation Counsel, D.C. Department of Corrections, and D.C. Board of Parole. In 1984, the District of Columbia reported 53,857 Crime Index Offenses, representing a crime rate of 8644.8 per 100,000 residents; the third year in a row of a reduction in reported Crime Index Offenses. Burglaries, robberies, and larcenies decreased in the years 1982 to 1984, while aggravated assault and motor vehicle theft increased. In 1984 the number of adults arrested for Crime Index offenses was 8,856 and the number of juveniles was 2,051. Adults arrested for drug violations in 1984 numbered 7,821 and juveniles 635. Adult criminal prosecutions in 1984 numbered 19,975 and adult convictions totaled 10,992. In 1984, 1,437 juveniles either pled or were found guilty of delinquent offenses. The District's average daily prison population in 1984 was 7,108, and the number of parole releases was 911, representing a 22-percent decrease from the 1983 figure of 1,163.
