Accreditation ensures compliance with and documentation of recognized standards in the operation of an adult local detention facility. Accreditation has provided tools for more efficient and consistent management at all levels of the LCDC. A primary benefit is the ability to track what has occurred at the facility during a specific period. Consistency is another benefit; Staff feel confident that their operations are sanctioned both by the department and by national leaders in the detention field. Staff also have better access to timely, accurate information. Inmates have a better attitude because the facility is operated consistently and fairly. In addition to these benefits, accreditation, while not providing immunity from inmate lawsuits, has provided a basis for defending operations and actions, documentation of the actual incident to be investigated, and appropriate policies and procedures for reviewing complaints. Since 1986 no lawsuits have been filed, and three 1985 lawsuits have been disposed as a result of having had policies and procedures and documentation available. Further, there have been no homicides, sexual assaults, or suicides; and there have been no disturbances or court-ordered judgments.
