Addressed mainly to parents of a child who has been sexually abused by someone outside the family, these guidelines are intended to help the parents and their children deal with the abuse.
Abstract
The information is also intended for use by people who work with families in these situations. The guidelines focus on identifying and managing many of the difficult emotions associated with the discovery of extrafamilial child sexual abuse. They also recommend professional consultation for children and their parents. The guidelines cover the types of abuse, the varying emotional reactions to abuse, medical indicators of abuse, and possible behavioral changes. They also detail how the parent should respond to the child and discuss potential long-term effects of abuse. Parents are also urged to find a friend, a relative, or a therapist with whom they can talk about their own feelings.
