Abstract
The educational needs of inmates and the role of correctional education programs in rehabilitation are discussed. The growing awareness of the importance of correctional education is illustrated in intensive programs aimed at improving inmate literacy levels and those requiring program participation as a prerequisite for parole. Examples of inmate remedial, general education development, and associate degree programs are provided, as is a description of Virginia's Department of Correctional Education. Teacher training and problems in correctional education programs also are discussed. Results of a survey of prison construction and construction costs are presented, together with a State-by-State table of construction in 1987-1988. A Michigan program in which inmates are charged for the daily costs of jail housing is described. Finally recent case law is reviewed concerning compulsory drug testing of correctional officers, the admissibility into evidence of taped inmate telephone calls, the use of photographic evidence in an alleged assault on an inmate, and juveniles' right to jury trial. Tables and figures. See NCJ-115906 and NCJ-115907 for individual articles.
