The accessibility of seat belts was determined in a sample of 200 taxicabs waiting to pick up passengers at airports in the following 8 cities: Washington, D.C., Oklahoma City, Atlanta, Chicago, New York City, Minneapolis-St. Paul, Las Vegas, and Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.
Abstract
At each airport taxicabs were randomly selected from those waiting to pick up customers until information had been gathered from 25 taxicabs. Limousines were excluded. A rear seat belt was accessible in terms of being able to be fastened within 10 seconds in 55.5 percent of the taxicabs. The proportion varied by city from 16.0 percent in New York City to 96.0 percent in Minneapolis-St. Paul. The proportion was higher in cities covered by mandatory State seat belt legislation than in other cities. (Author abstract modified)
