This article reports on the Public Health Service (PHS) modifications in June 1986 of its 1985 plan to control and prevent the spread of AIDS by the year 2000.
Abstract
At a meeting of experts in June 1986, the PHS reaffirmed these goals of the 1985 plan: (1) to reduce transmission of HTLV-III/LAV infection by 1987; (2) to reduce the increase in the incidence of AIDS by 1990; and (3) to eliminate by 2000 transmission of HTLV-III/LAV infection with a decline in the number of AIDS cases thereafter. The report identified populations who are at high risk for infection with the HTLV-III/LAV virus, recommends basic scientific as well as clinical and epidemiologic studies that need to be undertaken, and suggests approaches for developing drugs and vaccines to treat AIDS. Five areas of public health control measures are suggested: information bases, information and education, prevention of drug abuse transmission, prevention of sexual transmission, and prevention of transmissibility by blood and blood products. Patient care and healthcare needs are also discussed, with emphasis on Federal and State roles in the health care delivery system. 3 references.
