In a California Transfer-of-Knowledge Workshop on a continuum of care for the adolescent sex offender, participants from diverse professional disciplines produced recommendations and action plans for various aspects of the intervention continuum.
Abstract
During the 3-day workshop, participants heard several panel discussions in which individuals from model programs and from representative sections of the intervention continuum presented their views and findings. Presentations pertaining to systems issues in providing a continuum of care addressed law enforcement, prosecution, the judiciary, the Department of Social Services, and closed custody treatment. Panel discussions on identification and assessment covered sexual assault investigation, risk assessment, and juvenile court process. Panel discussions on treatment programs in residential, outpatient, and closed custody settings outlined four such programs. Panel presentations on probation and parole pertained to specialized probation and parole caseloads as well as specialized out-of-home placement. Panel presentations on treatment issues for the prepubescent sex offender addressed private therapy and cross-cultural issues. Recommendations from the workshop were in the areas of investigation/prosecution, assessment and disposition, residential and outpatient community treatment, closed-custody treatment, and aftercare. Appended workshop schedule, participant list.
