Results are based on interviews with executive and program directors and volunteer coordinators in 32 programs, cited resource materials, and personal experiences of the primary author. Volunteer programs enhance the agency and the services provided, offer opportunities for community service and involvement, and save money. In designing a program, it is necessary to consider the needs and resources of the organization and the sources, skills, and needs of the volunteers. Programs should include carefully planned coordination, recruitment, training, supervision, volunteer evaluation and recognition, program evaluation, and public relations and fundraising components. Services that volunteers perform may include counseling, crisis intervention, teaching, organizing and supervising activities, engaging in fundraising, maintenance and renovation, administration, volunteer recruitment and training, providing transportation, and assisting staff with aftercare and followup of youth. Programs may use adult and/or peer volunteers. Descriptions of youth service and runaway programs are provided. Supplemental materials are appended.
