Focusing on the protection executive as a businessperson specializing in security and loss prevention (SLP), this text provides an overview of the scope and nature of SLP, the function of SLP management and its improvement, information management and protection, and the law.
Abstract
Strategies to counter losses in the public and private sector are reviewed, and major reports and recommendation on SLP efforts are presented. Major SLP management functions are delineated, including planning, budgeting, organizing, staffing, and directing and controlling. Strategies for improving capabilities focus on marketing, human relations, stress and time management, risk management, and accounting and economic crime. Management information systems, software and hardware are described, and guidelines for purchasing such equipment are provided. Also described are strategies for protecting information and increasing computer privacy and security. Civil and criminal liabilities faced by the SLP manager are described, as are techniques for litigation prevention. Labor law and labor relations also are discussed. Finally, the impact of technology on SLP management is discussed; and future and present SLP issues are addressed, including atomic terrorism, protecting proprietary information, profit, drug abuse, and electronic monitoring.
