Log pirating, illegal shooting and snagging of spawning salmon, poaching black bears and deer, and shooting bald eagles are crimes that have occurred in remote areas of the Tongass National Forest. Various law enforcement personnel comprise the Forest Service, including law enforcement officers, wilderness rangers, recreation personnel, and others. The Forest Service utilizes informers to gain information regarding crimes. In addition, the Forest Service works closely with the United States Coast Guard in patrolling areas, and with the United States Fish and Wildlife Service in locating sites where wildlife has been endangered. The Forest Service is also responsible for instructing visitors on interactions with bears, so that neither party is threatened or endangered.
