This article reports on the officers on foot patrol in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
Abstract
Foot patrol is the most expensive form of police service, and it is a powerful deterrent of crime. In Colorado Springs (Colorado), foot patrol activities are concentrated around Acacia Park, an area frequented by drug dealers. Although drugs are still obtainable in the park, activity is now more restrained. Merchants in the town also view the foot patrols as beneficial to the community. The operation is currently being expanded to 'Stop, Walk and Talk,' where officers will park their car, patrol neighborhoods on foot, interact with citizens, then return to the patrol car. In addition, a mobile home is being outfitted to serve as a command post in a neighborhood where there is heavy drug trafficking, and the possibility of using horse patrols to patrol the downtown area is also being explored.
