The British Criminal Justice Bill provides the police and courts with a range of measures to combat violence and ease the impact on victims of violent crime.
Abstract
The bill has completed its final stages in the House of Commons. Under the bill, knife carriers must have a good reason for carrying their knives or face sanctions. The sale of offensive weapons without a legitimate use will be banned. Criminals carrying firearms will risk life sentences. Over-lenient sentences for the most serious offenses can be referred to the Court of Appeal. Improved extradition procedures will facilitate the return of violent fugitives. Regarding victim services, there will be improved anonymity for rape victims and closed-circuit television links for child victims and witnesses to reduce the strain of court appearances. The Criminal Injuries Compensation Scheme is to be put on a statutory footing, and courts will have to compensate victims of violence except in exceptional circumstances.
