This article discusses a systematic framework for the management of negotiations, including conflict and dispute resolution, that employs computer technology, the use of models, and communication technology.
Abstract
Negotiation management is needed because many conflicts are technically complex, call for quick and careful disposition, and must be resolved even though there is no one on the scene of unquestioned decision-making authority. The article outlines a project on modeling for negotiation management currently in operation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Eight elements of negotiation management are discussed, along with five major categories of models and the concept of modeling as it is applied to negotiations. Computer methods are used to simulate negotiating problems, to deal with risk and uncertainty, to select norms and procedures, and to use the computer as a third party neutral. Problems associated with the use of these technologies are detailed as are 15 specific activities that can be used to assist negotiation management. The article points out that models and teaching materials will be developed by the MIT project and will be made available to negotiating parties and third party facilitators. 50 references.
