The standards and goals provide a yardstick against which existing facilities can be measured and provide guidance for future renovation or construction. Courtroom space standards are provided for supreme and appellate courts; large, standard, and small trial courts; and family and rural courts. Design guidelines discuss general facility considerations, and courtroom elements and court support elements. Standards and guidelines are based on needs for accessible, appropriate, flexible, and economical multiuse facilities that will provide for the strategic management of growth, timely delivery of judicial resources and the maintenance and protection of resources, and uniformity of process and procedures. Recommended design concepts range from 2,400 square feet for supreme court and large trial courtrooms to 1,000 square feet for family court courtrooms.
