The growing problem of weapons in schools requires appropriate intervention and prevention strategies.
Abstract
Data on weapons confiscated from students in schools in recent years show this to be a significant problem. Although knives are the most common weapons found in schools, increasingly sophisticated firearms are readily available to students, thus increasing the potential for serious injury or death. School administrators and security personnel report a variety of intervention strategies, ranging from searching lockers to using metal detectors. Some schools use sweeps and searches to confiscate weapons. In one school, students may carry only clear plastic or mesh bookbags so that weapons are readily visible. School responses to students caught carrying weapons include counseling programs, suspension, or expulsion. Prevention strategies include the creation of a safe school climate such that students feel secure without weapons, student signing of nonviolence contracts with their parents, education and public awareness programs, and the teaching of conflict resolution skills. Education programs that prepare future teachers to deal with problems in the classroom are also essential. 8 notes.
