This document contains recommendations to assist the management of both patients and inmates infected with human T-lymphotropic virus type III (HTLV-III).
Abstract
The recommendations are applicable to all institutions under the jurisdiction of the Division of Care and Treatment Facilities in Wisconsin, but may provide a model for administrators of private mental health institutions and residential care facilities as well. The need for institutional control programs to prevent HTLV-III infection depends on the frequency of activity or behavior among patients and inmates that could expose these individuals to blood and body fluids and on the prevalence of HTLV-III infection. Recommendations for AIDS and HTLV-III infection control programs concern personnel management issues, patient confidentiality, the identification of patients with HTLV-III infection, infection control, accidental exposure to blood or body fluid, reporting requirements for HTLV-III infection, referral services, and discharge planning. Appendixes provide supplementary information on the preceding recommendations, legal issues, and case reporting. 27 references, 5 tables, 1 figure.
