The detention center was designed as a temporary holding center for the detention of minors pending court disposition. A centrally located control center contains an electronic and audio surveillance system for the facility, which houses up to 18 juveniles. The control center permits staff visual contact with a large portion of the living area and the two main traffic corridors. Staff provides direct supervision services at certain times of the day and indirect services at other times through the control center. Each sleeping unit has a toilet and wash basin, and every dayroom has a central bathroom with shower. An academic center permits group as well as individualized instruction. The center has a multipurpose gymnasium and recreational equipment located near the dining area and an arts and crafts room that is used daily. In emphasizing normalization, a bright, cheery interior is highlighted by the extensive use of glass. The walls have accent colors and painted graphics. Floor covering, carpeting, and area rugs help acoustics. Furniture is colorful yet sturdy.
