This report provides information on female inmates on death row as of April 1, 1988.
Abstract
Information is presented by State and includes the inmate's name, race, date and place of crime, and the date of the sentence. All 24 female inmates now on death row were convicted and sentenced to death for murder. They are 67 percent white compared to 52 percent white for male offenders. Narrative information indicates that the number of female offenders on death row has remained approximately at 20 inmates for several years. The practice of sentencing female offenders to death remains at a remarkably low rate. In recent years, the annual death-sentencing rate for all offenders has been about 300 per year. Female death sentences thus comprise only about 1-2 percent of the total death sentences each year.
