The State and local grant program allocates funds to States based on school-age population. Eight grants were awarded in 1987 to develop and distribute audiovisual materials for drug abuse education and prevention activities. An additional 92 grants were made to institutions of higher education to develop, implement, operate, or improve drug education and prevention programs. Funding also was made available for special programs for Indian and native Hawaiian youth. Regional centers have been established to train school teams to assess and combat drug and alcohol abuse problems, assist State educational agencies and institutions in strengthening drug abuse education and prevention programs and developing training programs for educational personnel, and to evaluate and disseminate information on effective substance abuse education and prevention programs and strategies. Financial assistance also is provided for training of teachers, administrators, and guidance counselors. Federal activities include grants for model and curriculum development and technical assistance, the Network of drug-free colleges, a drug-free school recognition program, the National Clearinghouse for Alcohol and Drug Information, and distribution of 'Schools Without Drugs.'
