This document defines Texas probation law and practice and presents the results of a survey conducted in 1988 of adult probation practices in Texas.
Abstract
Relevant statutory and case law supporting probation practice, along with regulations, are set forth in full and the results of the survey are reported. Survey questionnaires containing 60 questions divided into seven sections were sent to all 115 adult chief probation officers in the State, and 107 returned completed questionnaires. The seven sections of the questionnaire focused on the following: general information on probation officers and probationers, types of probation, pre-sentence investigations, conditions of probation, revocations, early releases and terminations, and supervision practices. Summary results for each question indicate how many respondents answered each question. The document contains an overview and history of probation in the United States and in Texas, as well as the relationship between probation and such entities as the legislature, the judiciary, the prosecutor, and the community. The administrative structure of local agencies is defined as well as the structure, functions, and goals of the Texas Adult Probation Commission.
