The Unified Intelligence Division of the Drug Enforcement Administration's (DEA's) New York Field Division surveyed officials in State and local police laboratories, intelligence and narcotics divisions, and local police precincts. The division also checked with DEA Headquarters, the New York resident offices, the DEA Northeast Regional Laboratory, and the New York Division of State Substance Abuse Services. Survey findings indicate that MDMA abuse in New York City occurs on a limited bases, primarily among a specific user population. MDMA, commonly known as Ecstasy, is experiencing a small surge of popularity among young middle-class nightclub goers. Despite MDMA's reputation among abusers as a harmless drug that delivers a strong euphoria, there is no evidence that MDMA abuse is widespread in the city or that use of the drug will increase in the near future. There are apparently no significant manufacturers or distributors in the city. MDMA availability is restricted and DEA/New York reported for 1988 only a few minor, isolated incidents involving MDMA and no significant seizures of the drug.
