The project began at one school when the author, a teacher/guidance counselor, noticed that 12-year-old Jamie continually got into trouble when he was not closely supervised. During a regular guidance class, the author led a discussion of how people can have positive or negative influences on other people. The author had previously discussed with Jamie and his mother the possibility of having the class focus on his behavior. Class members made suggestions on what they could do to help Jamie with his behavior. They drew cartoon characters on a special chart for each time period in which Jamie behaved well. Weekly class meetings were another important part of the project. Jamie's behavior improved substantially. The project is being expanded, with students and staff selecting 10 students to be trained in communication and helping skills. The 10 students will meet each week with the author to discuss what they have done to help others and what difficulties they have encountered.
