The decrease in terrorist activity by some terrorist groups is offset by the increase in activities by other groups -- particularly right-wing extremists and Puerto Rican separatists.
Abstract
These groups have few active members but draw support from a large constituent group of between 15,000 and 20,000 supporters. Their aims and motivations span a broad spectrum of anti-Federalist and seditious beliefs together with racial and religious hatred. These extremists are well-trained in the use of arms and explosives and are adept at guerilla warfare techniques and outdoor survival. The Aryan Nations is an extremist, anti-Semetic, Neo-Nazi group with the purpose of furthering ties with various like-minded hate groups. The Puerto Rican separatists have waged a terrorist campaign against the United States' possession of their island for more than thirty years. Their targets have been military personnel and installations in an attempt to create the impression that they are waging a war for national liberation against United States possession of their homeland. The terrorist acts are calculated to focus attention on the terrorist movement and its cause, and to educate other Puerto Ricans about alleged political, economic, and social inequities forced upon them by United States domination. 90 notes.
