Articles by experts in the field of youth and alcohol abuse provide an overview of the problem and discuss social/environmental factors in alcohol abuse, how to address the problem, and special issues.
Abstract
An overview presents facts on teenage drinking, data from a national study of the demography of adolescent drinking practices, and questions and answers about teenage alcohol use and abuse. Articles on social/environmental factors in alcohol abuse review research on patterns of juvenile alcohol abuse, identify factors in teenage drunkenness, examine how the family environment affects the etiology of adolescent alcohol misuse, and consider whether alcoholic-beverage advertising impacts teenage drinking patterns. Articles dealing with how to address the problem encompass the detection of early warning signals of alcohol abuse and various treatment and prevention approaches. Special issues addressed are working with alcohol-abusing children of alcoholics, facts on teenage drinking and driving, and efforts to prevent it. An inventory of resources includes lists of recommended readings; audiovisual, pamphlet, and other educational material; organizations and publishers; and books for youth. Appended supplementary material, subject index. For individual articles, see NCJ 117183-94.
