The 1988 annual report of the Oakland County, Mich., Probate Court is presented.
Abstract
The Probate Court handles cases of families and children under 17 years of age who are alleged or adjudicated to be delinquent or neglected and abused. In confronting juvenile problems, the court can use its diversion or counseling programs or more formal criminal procedures. The court is empowered to issue orders requiring older juveniles to be tried as adults in criminal courts. In 1988, the court handled 8,393 juvenile matters. Another court function is probating wills and administering estates. The court handled 7,401 such matters in 1988, but this figure is expected to increase with the county's median age projected to increase by 6 years between 1980 and 2005. The court also processes mental health proceedings and other matters pertinent to land, paternity, delayed birth registrations, and name changes. The court's divisions are outlined, its organizational structure is diagrammed, and the 1988 budget is included.
