The opening lesson provides an overview of the referral, screening, and basic level of programming in a sample chemical abuse program, followed by a lesson on drug classifications and drug abuse terminology. A session on alcohol and other sedatives presents the effects of alcohol and other sedatives on the physical, psychological, and social well-being of users. A lesson on narcotic analgesics is designed to develop an awareness of the effects of natural, semisynthetic, and synthetic narcotic analgesics on the mind and body as well as to inform students about the addictive properties of these drugs. Another lesson discusses the hazardous effects (psychological and medical) of cocaine and other stimulant abuse. Treatment strategies for cocaine and other stimulant abuse are outlined, and a self-test for addiction is provided. Separate lessons also cover hallucinogens, cannabis (marijuana), and tobacco. The concluding lesson focuses on drug dependency relapse prevention.
