There were about 6,700 bookings of juvenile arrests, excluding status offenses, traffic offenses, and warrants, in Honolulu in 1985. Of these bookings, about 3 percent were for serious offenses such as rape and robbery. Juveniles arrested for serious offenses not only had longer and more serious arrest records, but their average age of first arrest, 15 years, was a year more than the comparison group. Compared to juveniles arrested for a selected offense, serious offenders reported lower rates of parents being married and employed and higher percentages of abuse, being the only child, having a deceased parent, and having a nonguardian parent. The study's findings also suggested that juveniles arrested for a serious offense are at higher risk of continuing their offending behaviors into adulthood.
