House burglary and motor vehicle theft both decreased from 1987 to 1988, although attempted burglaries increased. Police officers in plain clothes used bicycles to patrol Whitley Bay subdivision to deter crime. The Divisional Crime Team works independently of routine duties and is targeted to areas where a crime problem exists or is developing. In addition, a civilian has been appointed to update crime victims about the status of their cases. Tape recording of interviews with suspects began in December and should reduce paperwork and allow officers to pursue other duties more fully. The police have also provided extra policing for special events, assisted by an active special constabulary. Morale among police officers is high despite economic restrictions requiring the curtailment of overtime and extra attention to the careful management of resources.
