These 1988 data on Federal district court grand juries and petit juries relate to juror service, juror costs, and a juror service profile sample.
Abstract
The reported statistics are computed from the JS-11 and JS-11G monthly reports submitted by each district court during 1988. Section I contains text and summary tables on grand and petit juror service, with grand juror statistics extending from 1981 through 1988 and data on grand jury sessions convened and defendants indicted covering 1983 through 1988. Section-I tables cover grand juror service, duration of grand juries discharged (July 1, 1983, to June 30, 1988), and proceedings by indictment and grand juror service. The effect of the Speedy Trial Act of 1974 on grand jury proceedings is discussed. Data on national petit juror service cover 1983 through 1988. Data address petit juror service on days jurors were selected for trial, juror costs assessed for cancelled trials, and a comparison of juror service for 1984-88. Also included is a check sheet on juror service factors that may influence the outcome of juror statistics. Section II provides estimates of expenditures for juror attendance, mileage, subsistence, and other costs. Section III consists of individual profile pages that highlight pertinent juror statistics for each district. Historical data summarizing the last 5 years are provided along with comments discussing specific factors that affected a district's juror statistics. A foldout of the national averages appears at the end of the report.
