A total of 779 rapes and attempted rapes were reported in Arkansas during 1988 through the Uniform Crime Reporting Program.
Abstract

The 656 rapes and 123 attempted rapes represented an increase of 0.6 percent over 1987. When time of day was known, 57.3 percent of all rapes occurred during an 8-hour period between 8:01 p.m. and 4:00 a.m. The most common time for rapes and attempted rapes occurred between 12:01 a.m. and 2:00 a.m. More rapes occurred in June than in any other month. Rape victims were predominantly white and less than 25 years of age. The youngest victim was 6 weeks old and the oldest was 90 years. Where type of force used was known, only 15 percent of offenders used an external weapon. For offenses in which race was known, 86.5 percent of rapes were between members of the same race. About 70 percent of all rapes were committed by persons known to the victim, and 43 percent of all rapes occurred in the victim's residence. Where time lapse was known, 53 percent of rapes were reported to law enforcement agencies within 4 hours of commission. There were two or more offenders in only 9 percent of rapes or attempted rapes. Of 656 rape victims, 71 percent received a medical exam. About half the offenders were between 20 and 30 years of age. A tabular list of the number of rapes and attempted rapes by county is included.
