This study of forty six London-based heroin users shows a strong relationship between heroin use and convictions.
Abstract
The subjects' annual rate of convictions more than doubled following the onset of regular heroin use. From the interviews, the subjects reported financing their habits largely through acquisitive crime, that is, types of crime capable of generating income including theft, dealing, handling and fraud. Most of the subjects were quite unable to support their expensive drug habits on the strength of their meager legitimate incomes. Eighty-three percent admitted they made up this shortfall by engaging in illegal or illicit activities. This paper discusses the numerous negative and unintended consequences of this lifestyle and suggests a coherent corporate strategy to bring together the range of services required to deal with this phenomenon. 6 tables and 20 references.
