During 1988, a total of 1,605 Medical Data Collection Reports were received by Connecticut State Police's Family Violence Reporting Program from medical facilities providing treatment for injuries sustained during family violence incidents.
Abstract
Of the 1,605 reports, 1,407 were analyzed; these reports indicated that 89.7 percent of the victims were female and that 89.8 percent of the assailants were male. Most victims were between 16 and 45 years of age. About 94 percent of the victims verified that their injuries were caused by family violence, and slightly over half claimed to have been previously injured by family violence. Approximately 83 percent of the victims had either minor or no injuries. In 95.6 percent of the cases, victims were treated and released, no treatment was needed, or treatment was refused. Two-thirds of the victims were referred to services related to the family violence injury, 46.1 percent were referred to the police, and 21.2 percent to another agency. A list of reports broken down by submitting medical facility is included. Tables and figures.
