Although violence against wives has been a widespread and long-enduring problem in India, it was not recognized as a social issue until the birth of the women's movement less than a decade ago.
Abstract
While the incidence of wife abuse in India is widespread, recourse for battered women is virtually nonexistent. Acceptance of abuse is rooted deeply in religion, women's low social status, and in the fact that Indian society is still feudal with patriarchal family systems. Family violence is considered to be a family matter and a husband is considered to have the right to rule his family and home. It is suggested that the first step toward ending violence toward women in India is economic emancipation.
