This handbook was written to help abused women face the situation they are in and develop appropriate solutions.
Abstract
The initial chapters define abuse, including emotional abuse, and reasons why abuse occurs. Dimensions of physical, emotional, and sexual abuse are examined, along with child abuse and child custody issues. The focus then turns to the family breakup, what women owe themselves, and making the decision to leave or stay with a partner that is loved. The next chapters address how to get professional help from police, prosecutors, and lawyers, as well as ways to find friends who will minimize loneliness and how to develop a support network. Specific guidelines are offered to help women look out for themselves and their children after the relationship with a batterer has been severed. The final chapters explore teen abuse and lesbian abuse. Activity checklists are provided to help women assess their situation, make the necessary decisions, and obtain support and assistance.
