Overly Manufacturing Company developed and conducted a series of tests in June 1988 to determine the sound attenuation characteristics of GSA Class Five Vault Doors.
Abstract
The tests were performed to recognized standards on three steel, production-line door assemblies: 1) a GSA Class 5 Vault Door, 2) a 3-hour, fire-rated 1.75-inch, hollow metal day door, and 3) a 1.5-hour, fire-rated, 1.75-inch sound-retardant metal day door. Findings showed that GSA Class Five Vault Doors offer little or no sound privacy unless they are fitted with either a sound seal gasketing system or a sound retardant day door with its appropriate hardware and sound seals. If the vault doors are used alone, fitting them with sound seal gaskets helps attenuate the sound. These gaskets reduce the usable height and width of the door opening, but they do not affect the security of the assembly. In addition, adding a fire-rated, sound-retardant day door provides excellent speech privacy when the vault door is normally open for controlled ease of access. The combination of the vault door and the sound-retardant day door provided the most practical combination of security and sound attenuation of the products tested. Tables and illustrations.
