The use of a computer in the moire method of characterizing and recognizing body features is a promising approach to the identification of individuals.
Abstract
The moire method is an optical measurement technique. The moire images are isometries under certain conditions, in which three-dimensional stereoscopic information regarding the human body is represented in two-dimensional images. Processing moire images requires a series of steps. Moire fringes must first be separated from the outlines of actual organs. The next steps are to thin the binary fringes and to determine the order of fringes. The resulting images can then be used in the extraction of moire features. The computer uses 18 features based on 9 organ points to recognize a face. Security professionals and others should conduct further research and development on the use of this approach.
