The curriculum assumes that both school and family must be involved to achieve the best results. More specifically, the curriculum is envisioned as one part of a comprehensive student assistance program that covers such facets of the alcohol and drug problem as education and prevention, identification, early intervention, referral, counseling, support groups, and active school and community involvement. The first part of the curriculum lays the groundwork by covering alcohol and drug awareness. Consideration is given to why students use alcohol and drugs, what kinds of drugs students use, what chemical dependence means, when alcohol and drug use becomes abuse or dependence, how alcohol and drug dependence affects the family, and help for alcohol and drug-dependent persons. The second part examines alcohol and drug prevention through the group process. Particular attention is paid to setting up a group program, the role of teacher facilitators, confidentiality, group participant selection, and activity selection. Three stages in the group process are identified: trust building; conflict resolution; and productivity. Illustrations.
