The Maryland Uniform Crime Reporting Program involves the compilation, classification, and analysis of offense, crime rate, and arrest statistics reported by all State law enforcement agencies.
Abstract
Statistics are reported for Part I offenses, including criminal homicide, forcible rape, robbery, assault, breaking or entering, larceny, motor vehicle theft, and arson, and for Part II offenses, including forgery and counterfeiting, fraud, embezzlement, stolen property, vandalism, weapons possession, prostitution and commercialized vice, sex offenses, drug abuse law violations, gambling, offenses against the family and children, driving under the influence, liquor law violations, drunkenness, disorderly conduct, and vagrancy. Offense, crime rate, and arrest data are analyzed in terms of crime factors, such as population density and size, population composition (age, sex, and race), economic status, climate, social characteristics (education, recreation, and religion), public attitudes toward law enforcement, and law enforcement agency efficiency. A total of 264,762 Crime Index Offenses were reported to Maryland law enforcement agencies during 1988. Crime Index Offenses include violent crimes (murder, forcible rape, robbery, and aggravated assault) and property crimes (breaking or entering, larceny, and motor vehicle theft). The 1988 crime rate for Maryland was 5,701.2 victims per 100,000 population, although the violent crime rate was 806.5 victims per 100,000 population. Arrests for violent crimes amounted to 21 percent of arrests for Crime Index Offenses and 5 percent of total arrests. Property crime arrests comprised 79 percent of arrests for Crime Index Offenses and 18 percent of total arrests. Additional statistical data on crime in Maryland are provided in a report supplement.
