The primary goal of the Incarceration Diversion Unit (IDU) includes the provision for intensive supervision of offenders after they have been sentenced to a State penal institution. As an offspring of the theory of intensive supervision, the IDU incorporates both reduced caseload size and intensive service provision. This program was expanded in 1983 to include a high risk unit. Results suggest that the high risk group held its own, and poses no more risk to the community than regular probationers. The author recommends reducing caseloads, increasing the number of contacts, and increasing services, particularly in the areas of employment, substance abuse, and counseling. 3 Notes, 12 Tables, 13 Figures.
