This chapter presents a psychological typology of delinquency and considers what treatment program possibilities should be considered for each type.
Abstract
The typology presented is that developed by Richard Jenkins based on an analysis of clinical files. One category of delinquents consists of those whose behaviors are largely determined by neurological and learning deficits. Another category has social deficits accompanied by withdrawal patterns. The neurotic delinquent, a third category, manifests behavior symptomatic of various neurotic processes. The unsocialized, aggressive delinquent, the fourth category, is usually the most destructive and persistent delinquent. The final two categories of delinquents are the runaway and the delinquent gang member. Overarching all the typologies are the socioeconomic circumstances influencing behavior. Particularly critical in this regard is the choice of lifestyle based on employment. 2 notes, 8 references.
