In 1987, 139,000 persons commenced supervision by the probation service, compared with 137,000 in 1986. At the end of 1987, 146,000 persons were being supervised by the probation service and, of this figure, 35,000 were in custody receiving prerelease aftercare and 11,000 were being supervised in the community. The number of juveniles supervised under the Children and Young Persons Act fell by 21 percent to 6,600 in 1987. A total of 84,000 persons commenced supervision under criminal court orders in 1987, 2 percent more than in 1986, and the number being supervised under criminal court orders at the end of 1987 totaled 89,000. The number of juveniles beginning supervision under the Children and Young Persons Act fell by over 1,000 between 1986 and 1987 to 5,000. In 1987, the number commencing aftercare rose slightly over 1986 to 50,000, and 54,000 persons were receiving aftercare at the end of 1987. Detention center aftercare was begun for 6,000 individuals in 1987, and 2,000 persons were receiving detention center aftercare at the end of the year. Youth custody supervision was initiated for 16,000 in 1987, a figure slightly higher than 1986. In contrast to the period between 1982 and 1986, the number beginning parole supervision decreased by 3 percent to 12,500. Persons commencing voluntary aftercare increased from 1986 to 30,000 in 1987, with 30,000 receiving aftercare at the end of 1987. A total of 1,500 juveniles commenced domestic supervision in 1987, fewer than in 1986, and 5,900 were receiving domestic supervision at the end of 1987.
