A total of 258,501 index crimes were reported in 1988. The month of August had the highest incidence of index offenses, while April had the lowest incidence. The value of stolen property amounted to about $206.5 million during the year, and the value of property recovered approximated $63.9 million. Arizona's crime rate was 71.9 crimes per thousand population. A total of 58,549 persons were arrested for index offenses. Adult index arrests totaled 40,199 and juvenile arrests totaled 18,350. Males accounted for 76.4 percent of index arrests and females 23.6 percent. A total of 20,872 violent crimes were reported, with violent crimes accounting for 8.1 percent of total index crimes. Aggravated assault accounted for the largest incidence of violent crime, and homicide represented the smallest incidence. Of 8,796 arrests for violent crimes, 7,568 were adult arrests and 1,228 were juvenile arrests. Males accounted for 87.9 percent of these arrests and females accounted for 12.1 percent. Nearly 238,000 property crimes were reported, representing 91.9 percent of total index crimes. There were 49,753 arrests for property crimes, including 32,631 adult arrests and 17,122 juvenile arrests. Males accounted for 74.3 percent of these arrests and females accounted for 25.7 percent. A total of 224,236 persons were arrested in Arizona during 1988, 177,311 adults and 46,925 juveniles; males accounted for 81 percent of all arrests and females accounted for 19 percent.
