In the book's first major section, three chapters describe the origins and some of the difficulties of victim/offender mediation in Canada and Great Britain. The third chapter focuses on victim attitudes toward victim/offender mediation. Nine chapters discuss mediation in practice. Some of the topics considered are steps in victim/offender mediation, precourt diversion for juvenile offenders in a British city, the evaluation of a reparation scheme in Coventry (England), and the use of victim/offender mediation with violent offenders. Other chapters in this section address victim-offender interaction groups, the mediation of adolescent-parent conflicts, the gap between ideals and reality in community mediation, victim-offender agreements in the context of existing criminal law, and alternatives to the judicial model. In addition to Great Britain and Canada, mediation is considered for the countries of West Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Finland, Japan, and the United States. Chapter references, subject index.
