Abstract
The traditional research model describes a rational sequence of steps in the research process. Research begins with a statement of the problem or research question, backed up by a literature review showing what is already known. A competing model, known as the "garbage can" model, attempts to capture some of the chaos of actual research and is derived from an organizational decisionmaking model in which theories, methods, resources, and solutions interact. The book is based on the garbage can model and reflects the needs of large, interdisciplinary research projects. Coequal status is given to the many elements required by such projects, and the model permits researchers to follow an orderly but flexible approach to the research process. There are fundamental dilemmas and limitations in any research effort. Knowledge is obtained by attacking the same problem using different methods that do not share the same weaknesses. Steps in the research process based on the garbage can model are detailed, and examples are provided of attempts to cope with problems that arise during the course of research. 3 tables, 180 references.
