While DEA is a law enforcement agency, it also has responsibility for preventing illegal or harmful activities associated with drugs. Simultaneously reducing both supply and demand is essential; demand reduction is particularly critical because it is something that drug producers and dealers cannot control. DEA participates in several major drug prevention programs, one of which is the Sports Drug Awareness Program (SDAP). Inaugurated in 1984, SDAP concentrates on preventing drug abuse among school-age youth through the support of coaches, student athletes, and amateur and professional sports figures. The program provides information to coaches on how to start a drug prevention program involving student athletes. The National Association of Broadcasters has joined SDAP; more than 850 television and 4,500 radio stations carry public service announcements featuring sports celebrities. In 1987, DEA's Drug Demand Reduction Section was introduced to focus on drug abuse education and prevention. This section is involved with SDAP and the Boy Scouts' Law Enforcement Explorer Program. State and local drug abuse prevention and education programs in Massachusetts, Kentucky, and New York are noted.
